Urine-alcohol limit

1) Statutory limit for amount of alcohol in urine above which it is illegal to drive, etc - 107 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of urine. Normally, determination of a drink/driving offence is based on breath/ alcohol test by breathalyzer or blood alcohol test but where this is not possible for medical reasons the urine test may be applied.

Urban clearway

1) Section of highway marked as such by appropriate signs (illustrated in Highway Code) and where vehicles must not park on carriageway during times shown on sign (except for as long as necessary to pick up or set down passenger). See also Clearway.

UPS

1) United Parcels Service. American, reputed to be world's largest, express parcels carrier. Its characteristic brown coloured, standard design vehicles are recognized worldwide.

Unlit road

1) Road on which street lights are placed at intervals greater than 200 yards (in Scotland 185 metres). Vehicle headlamps must be used on such roads between sunset and sunrise.

Unit cost

1) (1) In cost calculations, the cost of producing or moving a single unit as opposed to a whole batch or consignment. (2) The cost to an organization of acquiring one unit, including any freight costs, if obtained from an external source or the total unit production cost, including direct labour, direct material and factory overheads, if manufactured in-house.
