Telematics

1) (1) Defined in Concise Oxford Dictionary as: 'the branch of information technology which deals with the long-distance transmission of computerized information'. In the transport context, broadly, electronic systems for controlling and monitoring vehicle operations via cellular and satellite communication technologies. (2) Technology applied to road traffic and road vehicles. Computing and telecommunications systems established to promote the development and implementation of more efficient and safer transport (eg as in vehicle-to-base communication).

Typical examples of such technology include: electronic tolling systems; smart card ticketing; proximity stop information; on-board vehicle information and navigation systems.
