Automatic coupling 1) Type of coupling for articulated vehicles (no longer in widespread use) whereby the action of reversing the tractive unit under the semi-trailer results in automatic raising of the landing gear and release of the trailer brakes to provide swift coupling and uncoupling without the driver leaving the vehicle cab.
Fifth-wheel (5th-wheel) coupling 1) Type of coupling used on articulated vehicles comprising fifth-wheel plate on tractive unit (on which at least 20 per cent of weight of load on trailer must rest) and kingpin on semitrailer, which mate up, and lock into place.
