Vocational driving entitlement

1) Means driving licence needed for a person's work. Under new EU driving licence scheme, drivers who qualify to drive large goods/passenger carrying vehicles (LGV/PCVs) will be given a 'vocational driving entitlement' on their new 'unified' licence.


Unified driving licence

1) New form of driving licence in UK introduced in conformity with EU directives. Shows all of a drivers entitlements (ie ordinary/LGV/PCV) in a single document using EU system of categorization (eg Class IHGV licence becomes C+E entitlement).


Driving Standards Agency

1) Executive agency of the DoT which is responsible for all driver and driving instructor testing and for monitoring Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) standards.


Drink-driving limit

1) Statutory limit in UK for alcohol in the breath of vehicle drivers above which it is illegal to drive or be in charge of a motor vehicle (currently 35 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath, which equals 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood or 107 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of urine – RTA 1988 s11{2}).


Mixed driving

1) Regarding drivers' hours law, where driver in a week drives within provisions of both EU and British domestic drivers hours law. He may conform fully to EC rules or follow more liberal domestic rules where appropriate.


International driving permit

1) Form of driving 'licence' acceptable internationally but particularly where, for example, normal UK licence is not recognized. Available from RAC/AA to UK residents over 18 years of age and covers only vehicles which they are qualified to drive (ie on their normal licence).


Disqualification (of driving licence holder)

1) Driving licence holders can lose the right to drive for a given period when disqualified by the Courts following conviction (or indictment) for certain road traffic (and other) offences (eg drink/driving) or in other cases when the licence holder has incurred 12 penalty points on his or her licence within three years.


Trainee driving licence

1) Special heavy goods vehicle driving licence (now large goods vehicle entitlement) for young drivers training under Young Driver Training Scheme.


Restricted HGV driving licence

1) Heavy goods vehicle drivers' licence which restricted holder to driving vehicles of 10 tonnes maximum gvw - this restriction disappears with the introduction of new EU unified driving licence system.
