Road traffic accident

1) Accident involving motor vehicle on road in which damage to another vehicle or roadside property occurs or other persons are injured. 1) Situation where many vehicles on the same stretch of road, or in a town centre, result in congestion with consequent slow movement, frustration of drivers and excessive consumption of fuel and emission of vehicle exhaust fumes polluting the atmosphere - hence why traffic congestion is seen as an environmental evil to be eradicated.

Also responsible for disciplinary matters regarding LGV/PCV driver licensing. Normally, one for each Traffic Area appointed by Secretary of State for Transport, to whom they report annually.

1) (1) Vehicular traffic on a road or rail network, aircraft or ships operating along 'traffic lanes'. The more there are the greater the traffic congestion is said to be (ie the UK's M25 London orbital motorway is as congested with road traffic, as the English Channel is busy with shipping traffic, etc).
