Car sharing

Car pound
1) A secure parking area to which police (or their contractors) remove illegally parked vehicles and those causing obstruction. The driver/ owner has to pay a fixed penalty and removal fees before the vehicle can be taken away. Often manned by Traffic Wardens and is the only occasion when they can demand to see a driver’s licence.

Car-derived van
1) A vehicle defined in legislation for the purposes of speed limits; a goods vehicle constructed or adapted as a derivative of a passenger vehicle and having a maximum laden weight not exceeding two tonnes (ie this includes both closed-van type vehicles and open-back or pick-up type vehicles). Capacity management
1) A new term introduced in the late 1990s to describe the provision of additional hire vehicles (usually with driver) on a short/medium-term basis to supplement core owned-fleet at times of increased trading. BRS Ltd, the Volvo-owned former NFC road haulage company and now a major truck rental operator, is a key player in this market.

Cantilever
1) Term used for vehicle tail-lifts (see also Tail-lift) to describe the action whereby the load platform is lowered on arms which swing under the rear of the vehicle. Alternative to vertical method of operation.

CAN-bus
1) Controlled area network databus. A control system for electronics which, in heavy truck technology terms, replaces conventional wiring systems and allows such as engine performance data (fuel consumption, temperatures and operating hours, etc) to be displayed, recorded and downloaded - Volvo calls its system ‘TEA’ (Truck electronic architecture); Mercedes-Benz calls its system ‘Telligent’.
