Carrier’s lien

1) Legal term for the carrier’s right to hold goods until carriage charges have been paid. Particular lien means that a specific consignment of goods may be held until the charges relating to that (and only that) consignment have been paid - this is a standing right in law.

General lien relates to the holding of any goods until charges for previous consignments have been paid - this is a right only if provided for in the carrier’s conditions of carriage.
