1) Re international road haulage, a permit authorizing a single return journey from the UK to the relevant country (eg Italy). Such permits are allocated by IRFO at Newcastle upon Tyne on application.

From 1992 (opening of SEM) permit system within the EU is to be abolished to allow free operation across the whole of the EU area. Requirements may remain for travel to other mainland European nations (eg Austria, Hungary, Turkey, Yugoslavia).
