1) Passenger Transport Authority. Local government policy-making body in the UK's metropolitan areas (eg major conurbations such as Greater Manchester).

Originally set up under the 1968 Transport Act and 7972 Local Government Act to plan, operate and co-ordinate public transport within their respective areas. Their influence on local bus operations was reduced by the 1985 Transport Act, which removed their operating powers.
