1) Rear axle of goods vehicle containing two crown-wheel pinions for changing between high and low ratios. Operated from cab by vacuum or electrically. No longer popular with advent of multi-ratio gearboxes.

Two-speed axle 1) Rear axle of goods vehicle containing two crown-wheel pinions for changing between high and low ratios. Operated from cab by vacuum or electrically. No longer popular with advent of multi-ratio gearboxes. Road speed limiter 1) Device fitted to goods vehicles and coaches to limit road speed. Currently plans to require such by law on goods vehicles. Engine speed recording 1) Facility on certain models of tachograph instruments to record engine speed (ie revolutions per minute) on reverse side of chart in addition to standard recordings of time, speed and distance on face of the chart. Speed warning light 1) Regarding tachographs, a warning light in the face which can be set to come on at a pre-determined speed to warn driver that he is exceeding pre-set limit. Speed transducer 1) Regarding electronic tachographs, the device that converts the rotational speed of gearbox to indicate/record correct road speed at instrument head. Speed recording 1) Regarding tachographs, the recording of speed on charts (ie in 20 kph steps). Equates to what driver sees indicated by speedometer needle. |
