Rental (car/truck/trailer/fork-lift truck) 1) Business of renting out (usually on relatively short-term basis) vehicles, etc. Such vehicles used by firms needing extra capacity for short periods or cover for their own vehicles which are temporarily out of service. Car sharing 1) A facility authorized under the Public Passenger Vehicles Act 1981 whereby vehicles with eight or less passenger seats may be used non-commercially (ie when the fares paid amount to less than the running cost of the vehicle, including depreciation).
Car pound 1) A secure parking area to which police (or their contractors) remove illegally parked vehicles and those causing obstruction. The driver/ owner has to pay a fixed penalty and removal fees before the vehicle can be taken away. Often manned by Traffic Wardens and is the only occasion when they can demand to see a driver’s licence.
Car pooling 1) The sharing of cars by a number of commuters, frequently organized by an employer, a resident’s group, or the local authority.
Car-derived van 1) A vehicle defined in legislation for the purposes of speed limits; a goods vehicle constructed or adapted as a derivative of a passenger vehicle and having a maximum laden weight not exceeding two tonnes (ie this includes both closed-van type vehicles and open-back or pick-up type vehicles).
