Turning circle

1) (1) Articulated goods vehicles of 16.5 metres length must be capable of turning within minimum and maximum swept inner and outer concentric circles of 5.3 metres radius and 12.5 metres radius respectively. (2) Buses first used since 1 April 1988 must be capable of turning on either lock so that no part of the vehicle projects outside a pair of concentric circles with radii of 12 metres for the outer circle and 5.3 metres for the inner circle.

Turbojet

1) Type of jet engine used in aircraft comprising a gas turbine which provides forward thrust from the exhaust gas.

Turbo-compounding

1) Latest technology in engine design (eg from Scania). System for increasing power output by converting heated exhaust (ie waste) gases into energy. Uses second turbine mounted 'downstream' from standard turbocharger. Second turbine transmits power from exhaust gases via gear train direct to flywheel.

TUPE

1) Abbreviation for the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 1981 (implementing the EU directive on Acquired Rights) which safeguards employees' rights when they transfer to the new owner of their former employer's business.

1) Trades Union Congress. Central body of trade unions in the UK to which most (but not all) are affiliated.
